"A wish is father to the thought, and fear of the worst might make us inclined to expect the worst. We have to allow, too, for non-conscious wishes and fears in shaping our deliberate decisions. These may also mask or distort the significance of our true goals. We may deceive ourselves for years that we are pursuing a certain goal. When we achieve the goal, we are forced to call our own bluff and forced to realise that what we were seeking was merely a specious or pseudo-goal."
